You don't seem like you're in the IT Field, so paying someone else to do this is not worth the money on a 7 year old laptop since by the time you replace the hard drive, buy Windows, pay for labor, you could have nearly bought a new laptop anyway. For a 7 year old laptop, how much money are you wanting to invest in this? How much to replace the hard drive? How much to purchase Windows? How much time is this going to take you? Without your Recovery Discs, and if Hiren's doesn't see the Recovery Partition, you are left with either contacting Sony to get a replacement set of Recovery Discs, or purchasing Windows on your own and installing it from scratch. If you have boot options when you turn the computer on, there may be some restore functions there, but not if the hard drive is damaged, nonfunctional, or the recovery partition is damaged/inaccessible. Ultimately, you will probably have to replace the hard drive (an old, slow IDE hard drive at that) and you will most definitely have to reinstall Windows. You can also try something like Hiren's BootCD to see if the hard drive and contents are recognized using a non-Windows environment. Download the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility from their website, burn it to a CD, boot to it, scan the drive and see what it says. On a 7 year old system, the drive is probably toast, but as I said, there are ways to verify that. Identification alone is not enough to determine full functionality.
